Future PhD Students

Are you interested in enrolling in a PhD or MPhil program in the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney? We are pleased to invite you considering us as the place wherein you might undertake a postgraduate research degree.

To be admitted into a PhD or MPhil program, you must have an Honours degree in Government and International Relations, or a closely related field, awarded at the Hons 1 or 2.1 level, or an equivalent degree at an equivalent level (for example, a strong Masters degree that includes a significant research component, such as an independent research thesis of at least 15,000 words). The University of Sydney’s Masters of Public Policy or its Masters of International Studies, taken with dissertation, are examples of such equivalent degrees. You will notice from the application form available via the web page indicated above that the application must include a thesis proposal. The Department requires a -1500- word proposal indicating your proposed topic, relevant theoretical framework and literature and your intended methodology.

This proposal is extremely important. Applicants are assisted to refine their proposals once they have submitted the initial draft. Please note that we do not supply lists of topics to prospective applicants.
